Axolotl: A Spirit Guide (2023)

Year Completed: 2023 Materials: 1” aluminum tubing/fiber optic lighting
Description: A luminescent axolotl sculpture that brought the colors and mythology of Mexico to Burning Man 2023. 25 feet (7.5+ meters) long. Its welded body casts shadows across the ground that resemble cracks in the desert dust. Then at night, external gills and a dorsal fin made of fiber optic cables light up along the neck and tail of the axolotl, dazzling spectators as the colorful lights ebb and flow.

Description: This project is used by the Goodwill of Las Vegas to promote their “e waste” recycling program. Goodwill of Southern Nevada (Goodwill®) and Meow Wolf Las Vegas partnered to host an electronics donation drive and the unveiling of a one-of-a-kind desert tortoise e-waste sculpture crafted by local artist Luis Valera-Rico.
