PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Peso Neto (Organic Study No. 4) is a large-scale steel sculpture that pays homage to Mexico’s rich heritage and is a celebration of Mexican-indigenous and Spanish colonial architecture.

Luis hopes the work incites conversation about how the Spanish colonized the land and forced Christianity onto the people, and their attempts to erase our history.

The work takes direct shots at established paradigms and is a criticism of the way Christianity has impacted Mexican culture. Luis wants to promote thought about established religion and their hypocritical tendencies.

When people see Peso Neto, they will also be reminded of an ofrenda or altar utilized during the Mexican holiday, Dia de Los Muertos. Luis says, “I honor what my people have lost, while depicting the beautiful elements that remain. Peso Neto means “net weight” and the word “peso” can also mean heavy when used in the phrase “es pesado”. This piece is the peso neto of my culture.”
